Diagnostic Testing Preventative Screening FAQs

3D Screening Mammography

Regular mammograms are one of the most effective tools for the early detection of breast cancer, often identifying changes in breast tissue before a lump or other symptoms can be felt. Current screening guidelines generally recommend annual mammograms beginning at age 40 for women at average risk, although your provider may recommend earlier or additional screenings based on your family history.

Our state-of-the-art 3D mammography technology captures multiple detailed images of the breast from different angles, providing a clearer, more comprehensive view than traditional 2D mammography. This advanced imaging can improve the detection of breast cancer, particularly in women with dense breast tissue, while reducing the likelihood of unnecessary callbacks for additional imaging. Mammograms are a quick, safe procedure that uses only a very small amount of radiation, and our experienced team is dedicated to making your screening as comfortable as possible. During your visit, a specially trained technologist will guide you through the process and ensure you receive the highest quality care from start to finish.

Diagnostic Mammography

In addition to regular screening mammograms, we also offer more detailed diagnostic mammograms, which take additional specific radiographic detail of the breast tissue when a potential area of concern is identified on a screening mammogram or during an exam with your provider. We often perform the diagnostic mammogram at the same time as a breast ultrasound. You can expect prompt communication from the Radiologist if any abnormalities are detected, and you will be guided through next steps quickly.

Whole Breast Ultrasound

As of 2025, we are pleased to offer whole breast ultrasound at Cary OB/GYN as an additional screening option for early breast cancer detection. This is particularly helpful for patients with dense breast tissue (Category C or D). Please visit the American Cancer Society website below to learn about dense breast tissue and the benefits of additional screening.

If you have dense breast tissue, please contact our office to inquire about scheduling or for more information.  Please be aware that insurance may or may not cover this additional screening.

Laboratory Testing

Comprehensive laboratory services play an important role in diagnosing, monitoring, and preventing a wide range of women's health conditions. At both of our office locations, we offer a daily phlebotomist for convenient in-office laboratory testing, which can be done the same day as your appointment.  From annual blood work to prenatal testing and workups for abnormal bleeding or infection, we help make your healthcare as convenient and comfortable as possible.

Pelvic Ultrasonography

We offer daily pelvic and obstetric ultrasound services at our Cary and Morrisville offices, with experienced technicians and same-day readings by our physicians. Outside of pregnancy-related care, pelvic ultrasounds are commonly performed for a multitude of gynecologic reasons, including diagnosis of uterine fibroids, abnormal uterine bleeding, endometrial or uterine abnormalities, ovarian cyst treatment, and pelvic pain evaluation.
