What Happens During the Mammogram Exam

- Positioning: A trained technologist will position you in front of the mammography machine. Each breast is placed on a platform and gently compressed by a clear plastic plate. The compression spreads the breast tissue evenly to capture detailed images — this pressure lasts just seconds.
- Imaging: For 3D mammography, the X-ray arm moves in a small arc while taking multiple images from different angles. These images are then reconstructed into a 3D view of the breast.
- Repeat on the Other Side: The process is then repeated for the other breast. The entire imaging process typically takes around 20–30 minutes from start to finish.
During the exam you may feel some pressure or mild discomfort, but it is brief. Let the technologist know if it becomes painful — they can make adjustments to help.
After Your Mammogram
